We discussed the best kitchen knifes but whats the best way to store them? I know you just cant toss them in a drawer, thats dangerous and will dull the knife. I am told the butcher block is also not the best storage of quality knives because of the posible bacteria growth in the knife slots.

You will get bacteria in the knife slots only if the knife is wet when you place it in the block. You could also clean the knife block with bleach every know and then and if you still have a concern, use what professional chefs use, a magnetic knife holder on the wall. Not very pretty to look at but very sanitary.

Thanks for your help Dugan! I agree, a magnetic knife holder would not look very nice on the wall of my kitchen. :?

Is there a knife block that is made of a material that will not promote bacterial growth in the knife slots like the wood blocks?

II have found that the best way to store knives is in a wooden block but UPSIDE DOWN. This way the constant sliding in and out doesn't dull the blade. Just make sure that your knives are always clean and/or wiped down.

Thanks Reckless however the bacteria issue still exists. Is there a way to avoid that?

As I mentioned I always put back a clean knife. If it is a bread knife I wipe it down and obviously wash the other knives when they are used. I also never put my good knives in the dishwasher and always wash them by hand and I have never had a problem with bacteria.

I guess it's a matter of what you consider attractive. I LIKE having a 15" row of knives in easy reach.
