Post subject:  Golden Syrup

I have a recipe that calls for golden syrup. I know this item is used in the United Kingdom, but does anyone have any idea what I could use in the United States as a substitution.
Thanks
Yucca

I sent an email to a friend I know in the UK.. and asked for their help. He just got back to me and I'll copy his response here for you! I hope this helps!

I think Golden Syrup is just liquid honey. It's sweet, yellow and has the consistency of maple syrup.

If you don't have liquid honey, I would guess maple syrup would do as a substitue, but that is likely to make the cake rather dark.

I just heard back from the friend about golden syrup and he said the following:

I have just looked up Golden Syrup on the internet. Apparently I was wrong. Golden syrup is made from sugar cane according to http://www.fatfree.com/archive/2000/aug/msg00123.html

There is also a recipe to make your own at http://recipes.alastra.com/equivalents/ ... syrup.html

Golden Srup is made from Cane sugar. It is Sooooooooooo good, you will want to eat it with a spoon. I buy it at the grocery store in the "jam" section. It is Lyle's Golden Syrup and comes in a clear jar with a green label, it used to come in a can.
