I am hosting a breakfast soon and would like to put hash browns on the menu. I cannot get a recipe. All the websites say 'frozen hash browns.' I don't want frozen hash anything, I want to be able to make them myself. I have eaten them in the States and liked them very much. MacDonalds sells them here but..... can someone give me a recipe from scratch?
Thanks.

Here is a recipe that is simple to make and really is tasty.

4 medium potatoes,cooked,peeled and chilled
6 tbsp of butter
1 large onion finely chopped
salt and pepper

Shred potatoes using medium holes. Makes about 3 cups

In a heavy non stick skillet melt the butter over medium heat and cook onions until transparent, about 5 minutes

Add the potatoes, salt and pepper to taste and stir to blend with the onions and press down firmly.

Cook over medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are crisp and brown on the bottom.

Cut potatoes in four sections and flip over one section at a time. Cook until second side is browned as well.

Makes four servings. If you want to make the potatoes a bit more flavorful you can add about 1/2 tsp of Herbes de Provence to the mixture.
Enjoy.

:D Thank you so much!
I shall try these on Sunday (July 4th). What is Canada's special Day? Ours is Australia Day on January 26th.

Our special day is Canada Day which was yesterday July 1st. We have parades and celebrations of all types right across the country and usually a big fireworks display in the evening. Let's just say it is one big party. Hope your breakfast goes well.

:D Don't be sorry,it's no big deal. What you should do is come to Canada at this time of year and get away from the Aussie winter. We have our world famous International Jazz Festival as well as our world famous Comedy Festival where many comedians have been discovered. Montreal is a great place to visit.

I was in British Columbia some years ago. Loved Vancouver Island. Would have liked to do the Trans-Canada but the money ran out!
I gave the hash browns a trial run and they are great. Why not put the recipe on the recipe site? I know heaps of North Americans know how to make them but there is the rest of the world to educate. :)

Not a bad idea,I just might do that. Here in north america most people simply buy the frozen hash browns or the patty style that McDonald's serves. They are just too lazy to do it from scratch.

.... most of us are on the Atkins diet and don't do potatoes right now! LOL

Actually I had some really good hash browns at a local restaurant just the other day. I'll see if I can get the cook to share the recipe.
