Ok, so a little off topic, but does anyone else get irritated by the fact that Halloween stuff is already appearing in the stores? And that by Halloween Christmas things are already showing up? Not to mention that Thanksgiving is virtually by-passed - in the US anyway. I realize that it is all commercialism and related to $$$, but it is still annoying.

What, if anything, does everyone do to keep their holidays simple and un-commercial?

THE ALMIGHTY BUCK!!! It irritates everyone but we just sit back and take it. People just should not buy anything for Halloween until the 20th of Oct and the retailers will get the message that they are just wasting space until then. But of course people will see the products in the stores and figure why not buy early so that they don't have to rush at the end. If you want to avoid this go to a remote island and hope that the natives don't catch on to these holidays. Other than that you will just have to grin and bear it.

It is a shame how commercialized our world has become... and you really notice in the children... We, as parents, just have to remember to keep instilling those old-fashioned values in our children!

I make a point of not buying any Halloween products until after Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff will have to wait for Easter. My friends and family think I have an attitude problem but, hey, what do they know?

Yes, it does. In fact we are so amazed at the amount of 'stuff' that kids get at these times that we have started asking our older grandchildren: 'If you had some money to give away, to whom would you like to give it? " Starving kids, rainforest, endangered animals, etc. etc. They are quite chuffed to get a card with the receipt to a charity of their choice. It makes everyone feel good.

When the kids come to the door hand them a card and tell them to give it to their parents. On the card it will say that an amount of money has been donated instead of spending it on candy. Kids won't like it but it could help a lot of people.
