We've received a request asking about Block Chili.. I thought I'd post it here and see if anyone out there is familiar with it!
I am looking for block chili. I live on the East coast and can't find it anywhere. Is there any place around here or can I send away for some. Thank you, Kathleen

I'm sorry I can't give you any more information.. I rec'd an email from this gal and replied back to her that I had posted her message here and asked her for any additional information and never heard from her again... So I have no other information! Was hoping someone out there might know what she's talking about!
When I typed in Block Chili into the Google Search Engine I came up with a couple of sites and it appeared to me that Block Chili was a product you could buy at the grocery store, but I wasn't able to pinpoint anything exactly!

My Grandmother used to make something she called Block Chili, and it would be similar to a coney sauce I think. It was a beanless chili. It was very good, unfortunately when my grandmother passed, the "helpful" neighbor who always looked in on her, stole most of her cookbooks/recipes. Not to mention my grandmother probably kept more than half of what she knew how to cook just in her brain, never writting it down.

Hello everyone.
this is big jim, I have eaten block chilli every since I was a kid. I dearly love it.
It is a block ot tub of dried chilli con carne with no beans, I get mine at Von`s grocery
and the brand names is Johnston`s. I usually take two family size cans of cambells
vegetable beef soup and cut up the block chilli and cook that until the grease melts in the
chilli and the soup is hot. very good.

I live in Maryland and a friend of mine use to live in the Los Angeles / Hollywood area. He was recently telling me about block chili (which is how I found this site). He said his father would buy a block of dried chili (about 12 inches square) at a mom & pop store, bring it back to hydration in a pot of heated water until he got the desired consistency he wanted and would add ground beef and pork to the mix. My friend says it is delicious. He has tried to buy it here but cannot find it available. He has found frozen block chili but he doesn't think it'll taste the same. Good luck.

What they may be referring to is a frozen block/brick of chili. You then dilute with water/tomato sauce after thawing. It's very greasy, but oh, it tastes great! We had several brands to chose from, but since my mom made her own chili, we didn't use it.
