My version is really a bread and butter custard. You need a slice of buttered bread, a tablespn sultanas, 1 egg, 1 and a quarter cups milk, 1 tablespn sugar, a few drops vanilla essence and nutmeg.
Grease an ovenproof dish and place the sultanas in the bottom. Cut the bread into fingers and place on top of sultanas.
Beat egg and sugar, add vanilla and milk, and beat again.
Pour gently over bread.
Grate or sprinkle nutmeg on top.
Stand in a baking dish half full of cold water and bake at 300F until set, usually 30 minutes or more.Remove from hot water. Serve with cream.Serves two to three.
