Round Steak with Rich Gravy A Wintertime Comfort Meal for Sunday |
|
|
2 pounds round steak, one inch thick
one half cup flour
2 tablespoons shortening or oil
one envelope onion soup mix
one regular can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
|
Cut round steak into serving-size pieces and remove as much fat as possible. Dredge in flour and pound flour into meat, using a meat mallet.
Heat shortening in large frying pan (an electric frying pan is ideal) and brown floured meat on both sides. Meanwhile, combine mushroom soup, water and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl and blend with a whisk. When meat is browned, reduce pan temperature and sprinkle onion soup mix over it, then pour the mushroom soup mixture over the meat. Cover and simmer about two and a half hours, checking once or twice to make sure meat is not scorching and sticking, and loosening with a pancake turner if necessary.
Serve with mashed potatoes and a vegetable, using the gravy on the potatoes. An easy, old-fashioned and delicious Sunday dinner. Tip: for more gravy, simply double the mushroom/water/Worcestershire sauce measurements.
