Long Johns
Delicious!
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup boiling water
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 tsp. lemon flavoring
3 pkg. yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. salt
8 1/2 to 9 cups flour

Frosting-
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tbls. cream
Maple flavoring, to taste
Powdered Sugar

Combine shortening and boiling water. Stir in milk and lemon flavoring. Dissolve yeast in the warm water. Be sure shortening mixture is lukewarm, then stir yeast mixture into it.

When well-blended, add remaining ingredients; add just enough flour to knead well. Knead on lightly floured surface for 5 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes. Roll out 1/4 inch thick. Cut in strips 1x6 inches. Cover with a towel and let rise for one hour.

Deep fry to light brown on both sides. (Fry on raised side first) Drain on paper towel and frost.

Frosting-
Boil butter or margarine, brown sugar and cream for three minutes. Add flavoring. Stir in powdered sugar to spreading consistency and frost the long johns!
