Surprise Strawberry Shortcake

2 pints fresh strawberries 1/2 C. sugar 16 oz. whipped topping 9-10 slices crust trimmed bread room temp. butter sugar

Set aside 2 or 3 whole Strawberries. Combine remaining Strawberries and 1/2C. sugar, slice through, set aside. Butter one side of each trimmed bread, sprinkle with sugar. Measure out 1/4 C. of juice from Strawberry/sugar mix and set aside.
In a 9x5 loaf pan layer bottom of pan with sugared bread, buttered side up. May have to cut and piece bread to fit pan. Spoon 1/2 of strawberries over bread, top with 1C. whipped topping. Top with sugared bread, butter up, cut to fit. Put on rest of strawberries and 1C. whipped topping. Layer with sugared bread, buttered side DOWN, cut to fit. Drizzle reserved juice over the top. Cover and chill 3 hours. Invert on to a platter, Frost with remaining whipped topping. Garnish with reserved strawberries, sliced. Cut with very sharp bread knife. Serve.
