Grandmas Beef Stew

60 mL all-purpose flour ¼ cup 2 mL salt ½ tsp 2 mL pepper ½ tsp 750 g stewing beef, cubed 1 ½ lb 30 mL canola oil 2 tbsp 2 medium onions, sliced 2 1 clove garlic, minced 1 1 can beef broth (284 mL/10 fl oz) 15 mL worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp 2 mL thyme ½ tsp 2 bay leaves 500 mL tomato juice 2 cups 500 mL water 2 cups 4 carrots, peeled and sliced 1 turnip, peeled and sliced 3 celery stalks, 1 inch pieces 6 potatoes, peeled and diced flour and water for thickening

1. In a plastic bag, combine flour, salt and pepper. Drop beef into bag and shake to dredge cubes.
2. In a large heavy skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add meat, onions and garlic and brown.
3. Add all other ingredients except the vegetables. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1 to 2 hours or until beef is tender.
4. Add raw vegetables. Continue to simmer for about 1 hour until vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaves. Thicken with flour and water. (*Shake about 2 tbsp flour in a container with about 1/3 cup water. Add to stew as needed to thicken.)
