Grandmas Beef Stew
60 mL all-purpose flour ¼ cup
2 mL salt ½ tsp
2 mL pepper ½ tsp
750 g stewing beef, cubed 1 ½ lb
30 mL canola oil 2 tbsp
2 medium onions, sliced 2
1 clove garlic, minced 1
1 can beef broth (284 mL/10 fl oz)
15 mL worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp
2 mL thyme ½ tsp
2 bay leaves
500 mL tomato juice 2 cups
500 mL water 2 cups
4 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 turnip, peeled and sliced
3 celery stalks, 1 inch pieces

1. In a plastic bag, combine flour, salt and pepper. Drop beef into bag and shake to dredge cubes.

2. In a large heavy skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add meat, onions and garlic and brown.

3. Add all other ingredients except the vegetables. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1 to 2 hours or until beef is tender.

4. Add raw vegetables. Continue to simmer for about 1 hour until vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaves. Thicken with flour and water. (*Shake about 2 tbsp flour in a container with about 1/3 cup water. Add to stew as needed to thicken.)
