Gut Buster Chili

4 lbs. coarsely ground beef 2 yellow onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 green peppers, chopped 1 can (14 oz.) diced tomatoes 1 can (8 oz.) tomato paste 1 can (8 oz.) diced green chilies, Optional 2 cups brewed coffee 4 Tbls. chili powder 3 Tbls. cocoa powder 1-1/2 Tbls. cumin 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 Tbls. salt, or to taste 2 bay leaves 4 tsp. finely grated orange zest

In large soup kittle, saute beef, onions and garlic. Drain off excess liquid. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 1 hour, until flavors are developed and mellowed.
My husband found this recipe in one of his cookbooks. It is our most favorite chili. Serve it with cinnamon rolls, corn bread, oyster cracker or grilled cheese sandwiches.
