1 Cup Yellow Split Peas (Chana Dal) 1 Cup Red Lentils Small Onion 4/5 Cloves of Garlic Cumin Seeds Mustard Seeds 1 Tbsp Turmeric 2-3 Tbsp Curry Powder (own preference) 1 Tbsp Dried/Crushed Chilli Fresh Corriander Water
|
1. Put yellow split peas and red lentils into your pressure cooker with the turmeric and enough water to cover by about 3 inches. Bring up to pressure and cook for 20 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, finely chop the onion and the garlic and set aside. Now dry-fry/roast the cumin seeds and mustard seeds for about 3 minutes or untill they start smelling nice. When this happens, add a little oil (not olive oil) to the pan and throw in the onions and garlic to soften - about 5 minutes.
3. Now add your prefered curry powder (mine is Balti Curry Powder from Morrisons!) and stir well. At this point the mixture will be quite dry but thats ok, you need to cook off your spices.
4. Check the lentils, the Dal should now resemble a thickish soup, cook for 10 minutes longer if needed or add some more water if too dry.
5. Combine your onion/garlic/spice mixture with the Dal and stir very well. Continue to heat with the lid off for a further 10 minutes.
6. Now add the chill and chopped fresh corriander just before serving.
7. Eat with Nan bread - mmmmmmmmm, it's lush!
