A local restaurant holds a 'chili cookoff' every year on 'Stupidbowl Sunday'. Last year I was awarded 'Hottest' in both Judges and People's Choice categories. It was somewhat spicier than I was shooting for, but not a bad effort.

This year I'm going to tone it down a great deal and see what we can do in the 'flavor' department.

Well Flash,it is the 12 of Feb and have not yet heard how you fared in the chili cook-off.
Let us know big guy. Did you put some flavor in this year and win the whole thing?

... to no avail. Still won 'hottest' again and have the trophy to prove it. That picture has been cropped and compressed but still isn't for the bandwidth impaired. BTW, the little figure in the bottom of the trophy is a fireman with hose... I only put in enough chili powder and cumin to make sure it was distinguishable from spaghetti sauce but ya can never tell about these judges. (Buncha weenies!)

I have to admit I prefer my chili on the milder side of scorching. I like it to make me cry, but not burn my tastebuds so badly I can't taste anything for two days.

How about next year? Are you going to try for the flavor category again or simply attempt to hold onto your 2 year title?

One of my favorite kinds of chili is bear chili. I do find that one has to be careful with peppers or hot spices of any kind with bear though. It seems to take the flavors of anything zesty and magnify them. Has anyone else noticed this?

No, bear chili is something I've not had the opportunity to try.

Unfortunately the place that held the chili cookoff decided to start closing on Sundays... then when Stupidbowl Sunday came around and they opened to have the cookoff, nobody came cuz they were so used to being somewhere else on Sunday.

Lesson: If you close your doors, you give your client base a chance to find somewhere else to go.

That is SUCH a shame! I just hate when something that I look forward to gets changed up.

Maybe we should have our own chili cook off testing each others recipes and voting for the best one. Any takers?

Chili would be alright about this time of year, right?

How would we work this thing? Ship samples to judges/participants on dry ice? lmao

Find out whos interested in the contest...Post the recipes... Each contestant cooks them over a few weeks time... Then they post their favorites...

Simple eh?

As long as its for fun that would be fine.... I don't know any cook that can take a recipe and reproduce it 'verbatim' as the recipe originator would. We all have our own little twists on processes based on the tools we have in the kitchen..... but there's no denying it would be fun.

Thinking about that a bit further.... tailor your recipe to ten servings and be very explicit about processes/methods. Weigh in here, Joy. Want to have an official contest?
